Scott Hums joined WTHR as the Digital Content Director in 2015 where he oversees the TV station’s digital initiatives. Before arriving at WTHR, Scott managed WISHTV.com.
Before coming to Indianapolis, Scott worked for ABC 4 / CW30 in Salt Lake City, Utah as the Web Channel Director. Earlier in his career, Scott worked in South Bend, Indiana for NBC affiliate WNDU. Scott ran the web department for the station. Before that, he worked in the newsroom doing a variety of behind-the-scenes jobs. While at WNDU, Scott contributed to the award winning Notre Dame football pre-game show “Countdown to Kickoff” and the Notre Dame coach’s show “Inside Notre Dame Football.” Scott was also a special projects producer, photographer, and editor working on a number of special reports.
During his career, Scott has been honored with a number of awards, including contributing to the team that won a 2016 George Foster Peabody Award and a 2017 duPont-Columbia Award. Scott has also won the the Indiana Associated Press award for Best Website in 2013, 2014, and 2015, the IBA Spectrum Award for Best Website in 2014 and 2015, and an RTNDA Edward R. Murrow Award for Best Website.
Scott is a graduate of Ball State University where he received a B.S. in Telecommunication with an emphasis in Television Production. While at BSU, Scott worked on a number of programs at the student television station and at WIPB, the on-campus PBS affiliate. Scott was voted “Member of the Year” twice by his peers and won a number of awards, including the national Mark of Excellence from the Society of Professional Journalists.
In his spare time Scott enjoys spending time with friends and family, especially with his wife Shalah and his Shih Tzu, Bella. Scott is a huge sports fan and loves watching college and professional football and basketball.
Alan D. Riebe
Retired in December of 2015 over 43 years in the broadcasting business from WANE-TV (CBS) in Fort Wayne as Vice-President and General Manager .
He started in January of 1992 as Local Sales Manager, assumed the role of General Sales Manager in 1997, and then promoted to General Manager in 2003 at WANE-TV, LIN Television Corporation. Alan was responsible for a staff of over 90 full time employees and an annual budget of over fifteen million dollars.
During his tenue as GM:
- Took the station to the #1 local news position and held that advantage for over 11 years
- Became the leader in single station revenue in the Fort Wayne TV market
- Planned and executed the move to High Definition local news programming.
- Improved dramatically the station’s public service image within the community
- Served on various boards, two of which were five year plus board terms with the Fort Wayne Philharmonic and the Fort Wayne chapter of the Urban league.
After various board positions with the Indiana Broadcasters Association assumed the role of Board Chair in 2015. (only the third person to serve as Chairman from Fort Wayne in IBA History).Working with the board, I helped plan and execute operational changes and the hiring of a new IBA Executive Director. As IBA Board Chairman made several trips to Washington to brief Indiana House and Senate leaders on key broadcasting issues.

Bob teaches Video Productions and Media Studies Program at The Porter County Career and Tech Center. He also currently serves as Vice President of Secondary Schools for the Indiana Broadcast Association. Bob has made a difference in the lives of numerous students, their families, and community service organizations.
Bob has continually piled up state awards for his teaching and for the success of his students. A number of his alumni are BSU TCOM grads (Sarah Jackett, David Sheets, Tyler Talsma, Brandon Mattingly, Taylor Hirstein, Mark Passine, Kenneth Cohen are just a few that come to mind). Bob’s program received an Indiana Award for Excellence on February 23, 2016 for having the best Career and Technical Education program in Indiana.
Bob Phelps, is a true professional educator. His experience includes a BA from Ball State in telecommunications and work experience at WNDU in South Bend, Fox 59 in Indianapolis, and WIPB in Muncie. He also won numerous industry awards for his productions and photojournalism work. He continues to maintain his professionalism by contract work in the field. He is a faculty leader and acknowledged instructional technology expert and serves on the District Technology Committee.
The Video Productions class locally is known for its video productions for non-profit agencies to include the Community Foundation, Opportunity Enterprises, the Women’s Shelter, the United Way, and numerous others. The quality of our student work always exceeds expectations. The program is also proud of its designation as Outstanding Student Television program in Indiana as designated by the Indiana Association of School Broadcasters the last three out of four years. The IASB has given the class numerous awards over the years. A few years ago, a student won one of the top student awards at the IASB, even though she was seriously ill and had to be home schooled by Mr. Phelps, who used a variety of advanced instructional technology to facilitate her learning while she was home. The program also does remote work to include live sporting events, musical, and theatrical live streaming.
Program graduates have gone on to tremendous success that includes one working for the David Letterman show, another group of graduates who won the national 24 hour film race, another who is a successful actress, and another group of grads who are operating their own production company in Chicago. This program was nominated and unanimously endorsed by our District Advisory Board.
Dwight D. Smith
Dwight D. Smith is an award-winning television producer based in Los Angeles. He has created and produced many hit shows including Hollywood Game Night starring Jane Lynch on NBC (now in its 6th season with 20 international versions currently airing) and the wildly popular special effects make-up competition Face Off (now in its 13th season) on Syfy.
Smith currently serves as Co-President of Mission Control Media, a company he formed in 2008 with producing partner Michael Agbabian. Since that time the duo have earned two Emmy Awards, 4 Writers Guild Awards, a Critics Choice Award and 2 NATPE Reality Breakthrough Awards among others. Additionally, Mission Control Media has repeatedly been named by the Real Screen organization as one of the top unscripted production companies in the world.
Mission Control is also known for working and partnering with high level celebrities on many of their projects including Christina Aguilera, Common, Taraji P. Henson, Sean Hayes, Jane Lynch, Nick Lachey and Andy Richter.
Recent projects include Apple’s first show, Planet of the Apps starring Gwyneth Paltrow, Jessica Alba and will.i.am as well as First and Last, a gritty new documentary series set in a Georgia jail for Netflix.
Other projects produced and/or written by Smith include Project Runway, Last Comic Standing, Weakest Link, General Hospital, Days Of Our Lives, Framework, Game Face, How to be a Grown- up, Marcel’s Quantum Kitchen, Hot Set, WCG Ultimate Gamer and Late Night Liars.
Additionally, Smith and Agbabian have created, developed and/or produced a multitude of innovative programs for various outlets including Netflix, Snapchat, Apple, NBC, ABC, CBS, Fox, Disney, Discovery, Spike, Bravo, USA, Syfy, MTV, GSN, Food Network, Lifetime, History and truTV.
